What does a self-contained car need?

- A trash can - A portable toilet - A fresh and grey water tank - A Bed - A sink - A tap

Where to place the toilet?

Online we see a lot of confusion about the standards on where your toilet need to be. Your toilet need to be accesable when the bed is made and it needs to be secure. How to secure it it needs to be boxed in with a wooden or metal frame .(it can't be with a bungee cord or any cords anymore)

What requirements are there for the water tanks?

You need two water tanks one fresh-water and one grey water. (you can also have multiple) Your grey-water and fresh-water need to have the same literage. Most common tanks to get for two persons is 25L(both of the tanks) or for 3 persons 50L. The grey-water tank should have a hose from the tank above the lowest part of the sink in a trap(loop) to the outside of the car. We usually drill a hole in the bottom of the car to have the hose run through.

What are all the dimensions requirements for self-containment?

The sink: Needs to have a waste diameter of 30 mm The Hoses: From the sink needs to be at least 3meters From the water tank also 3 meters The evacuation hose doesn't have a requirement as long as it is outside of the car. The diameter of the vent: at least 20mm The inlet (from the tank): at least 40mm

What do our registered self-containment officers do?

We have years of experience helping backpackers move around NZ, and being a registered company, we have a reputation to maintain and NZ laws to oblige. The self-containment officers will help you with tips on how your vehicle needs to be set up to have it self-contained. They provide feedback and tips on how to get the requirements on par .

Self-containment allows you to sleep on hundreds of location throughout New Zealand. You will be able to have a cheaper and hassle-free experience. It will help you cut the cost of your travels for not having to book Hostels or expensive campsites. Another way it makes your travel less of a hassle is where you can stay. Because of the hundreds of options you are able to be closer to stay by the location of your next day travel, you also don't need to drive longer distances this will save you lots of time and money for gas.

What are our policies?

We want to oblige by every rule of self-containment and have every vehicle professionally checked. You can make an appointment with one of the Self-containment officers to have it inspected. If something is not up to the standard there will be no extra fee we will only charge you when the vehicle is up to the standards and we can send out the warrant card. When there is something wrong with the set up we will help you with tips and tricks on how to do it as efficiently as possible. We have hundreds of self-containment checks on our name so our officers will help you to get to a solution when you have a special set up.

How long will it take to get the self-containment label?

If you follow the rules listed above and your vehicle is ready to be self-contained we will fill out a form with you. On this form, you need to state your name, address(if you have no local address you could have it send to our office and pick the label up), contact information. One of our self-containment officers who evaluated the car will fill out all the details regarding the setup. If all this is done we move on to the payment if that is accepted we will send out the form to NZ Lifestyle Camping which is the national association for self-containment. They will send the card up to or your local address or our office between 2-5 business days.
