Tolls in New Zealand

October 12, 2018

There are some toll roads in New Zealand that you should be aware of while driving around. To avoid any unnecessary fines read this blog post to know everything about tolls!

Where the toll roads are

The Transport Agency currently has three toll roads. The Northern Gateway Toll Road in the north of Auckland, the Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road and the Takitimu Drive Toll Road, both in Tauranga.

The Northern Gateway Toll Road is between Silverdale and Puhoi and is part of the Highway 1 and costs $2.30 one way for a car, motorcycle, or light commercial vehicle.

The Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road is between the Domain Road interchange near Papamoa and the Paengaroa roundabout (SH2 and SH33 to Whakatane & Rotorua) and costs $ 2.00 one way for a car, motorcycle, or light commercial vehicle.

The Takitimu Drive Toll Road bypasses the Tauranga City centre and takes traffic from the State Highway 29 to State Highway 2 in the direction of the Port if Tauranga and Mt Maunganui. It costs $1.80 one way for a car, motorcycle, or light commercial vehicle.

How to pay

Debit or credit card

You can buy or pay a Pay & Go toll with your Visa or MasterCard.

POLi

If you have internet banking with ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, TSB Bank, Westpac or Bank Direct you can buy or pay a Pay & Go toll using Payment Online.

Cash

If you want to pay with cash you need to go to selected service stations (BP, Caltex or Z). But a transaction fee of $1.20 per transaction will apply.

How electronic tolling works

You don't need to stop at a toll booth. At the toll point cameras will capture an image of the vehicle's registration plate number. The latest optical character recognition technology to read the registration plate and determine whether you're driving a motorcycle, car, truck or bus and assign the correct toll.

The system checks if your vehicle is linked to an account. If yes, the toll transaction is loaded against the account, if it isn't the system holds the toll record. If have you haven't paid within 5 working days, a Toll Payment Notice may be sent to the registered person of the vehicle.

If you're the registered person but weren't driving fill out the Statutory declaration in respect of a toll payment and send it to:
